Understanding Cellulite

  Enhanze Newsletter Oct 2002

Cellulite is the name given to the irregular fat deposits often found around the hips, buttocks and upper legs areas. It is sometimes described as "orange peel skin" because of the dimpled appearance of the affected areas.

Nearly all women will develop noticeable cellulite at same point in their lives - even those who put a lot of effort by exercising and keeping their bodies slim and well toned.

Cellulite occurs because a large number of women's fat cells are located in pockets within the connective tissue of the skin. Over time, a build-up connective tissues, creating the "orange peel" effect or the skin that we all dislike so much.

Cellulite occurs because a large number of women's fat cells are located in pockets within the connective tissue of the skin. Over time, a build-up connective tissues, creating the "orange peel" effect or the skin that we all dislike so much. The vertical connective tissue fibers shrink and thicken with age pulling down the anchor points. The lobes swell and push out the Epidermis forming bumps.

Identifying Cellulite On Your Body

  • Its that dimpling skin that looks like orange peel.
  • Try squeezing some of the skin on upper thigh and if it looks lumpy, you have it. The skin might also look whiter and feel colder than the rest of the body.
  • It can be found on the thighs, bottom and even the tummy.

      What are the causes?

  • Poor diet, stress and lack of exercise, hereditary factors, and hormones seem to play a factor in whether or not you have cellulite.
  • Hormones seem to be a factor because men don't get cellulite!

Why can't we just exercise the cellulite away?

Because cellulite is a complex problem, it must be addressed from the subcutaneous layer, to act on fluid retention. Diet and exercise both have an effect on deep fat, they both fail to act on the underlying because of cellulite in the superficial tissue of your skin. Women who exercise regularly and follow low-fat diets still have cellulite.

      Slowing the appearance of cellulite

The sooner you take step to reduce the appearance of cellulite, the more effective it will be. Cellulite becomes more noticeable with age. However it is possible to take steps to slow its appearance by :
  • Increasing your exercise and watch the diet. Avoid sugary snacks and instead reach for fruits and raw veggies.
  • Drink lots of water to cleanse your system and flush the toxins from your body cells.
  • Avoid coffee and switch to herbal teas. Fruit juices are better than soda too.
  • Vitamin C has been recommended by cellulite researchers.
  • Swimming is great as is walking and any stretching exercises.
  • Boost circulation by massaging the area everyday for 10 min at least.

      Professsional Services

  • Mesotherapy - expensive medical therapy where drugs are injected into the cellulite deposits to boost circulation and stimulate drainage.
  • Cellulolipolysis - questionable technique where electrodes are encased in long needles and are inserted into the cellulite.
  • Surgery - none of the forms of liposuction have shown to be able to remove cellulite and there is risk of damaging circulation and lymph system.
  • Endermologie - The only FDA approved, non-invasive, non-surgical means of cellulite reduction. Endermologie uses rollers and gentle suctioning to deep massage the affected areas in a way that cannot be otherwise duplicated.
